Betty Taopat Kao is an artist and writer, integrating both mediums as tools for storytelling. She is interested in how artists use images to voice the collective subconscious. Betty is a visual storyteller, her major influences and investigations include anthropomorphic objects, toys, packaging, metaphysics, religious mythology, Pan-Asian culture, sacred plants, environmentalism, and medicine. Her work explores the mythologies and memes of our culture. The mixed-media nature of her work relates to how she interprets her surroundings in relation to herself. She was raised in New York City, a place where global culture prevails, and a single neighborhood will speak predominantly five different languages, but be fused with dozen of cultures. She has exhibited artwork with The Queens Museum of Art, The Amherst Museum, 3rd Ward, Ad Hoc Art, Housework, Hudson Terrace, Chashama, and the Billyburg Film Festival, among many other venues. Her award winning art and writing have been featured in various publications including The NuyorAsian Anthology: Asian American Writings About New York City.
